On Imbalance Between Ibadah(Rituals) and Muamalah(Day-to-day dealings)
Recently, I saw someone accuse another of promoting the preference of Tech Events over Quranic Recitation competitions and the accuser emphasized the superiority of the religious over the mundane. It made me to wonder why they had to be 'mutually exclusive'. Why can't we have both? Why can't we have private individuals spending on public goods such as schools, hospitals, scholarships, foundations, endowmen...ts etc., with the same dedication and commitment that is put into the building of mosques and sponsorship of people to Hajj!
I don't think the spiritual realm is limited to those aspects of the religion that are Ibadat and therefore we should not limit the activities that will enable gaining salvation to just ritual acts of worship. For even in the mundane there are innumerable opportunities for salvation. A case in point is the woman who was known as a prostitute that was forgiven and granted Paradise for the seemingly 'mundane' and trivial act of giving a thirsty cat water!
The problem of our society is that of prioritization and an up-side-down philosophy that places a 'skewed' premium on 'religiousity' as against 'spirituality'. That is why we fill our mosques and perfect our rituals but we fail to uphold such perfection in our mu'amalat (day-to-day dealings). The same people will lie, cheat in business dealings, maim and kill for wordly benefit and commit all manner of atrocities.
If we go by the standards of our pious Predecessors we will see that they represented the perfect balance between Muamalah and Ibadah. In fact that was what laid the foundation for the much touted and prideful 'Golden Age of Islam'. Alas, Muslims have since fallen into the abyss of 'literalism' and 'haramization' of virtually everything. This, it seems has led to having a 'ritualistic' observance of worship. We wear the toga of religion once we enter the mosque and remove it as soon as we come out and revert to 'irreligion' in our day-to-day mundane dealings.
Unfortunately, this has removed all the blessings from our dealings and rendered us backward despite our skewed dedication to 'religiousity'. And so long as we continue to sustain this skewedness, so long will we remain stagnant; resigned to being the ones who play catch-up in this ever-changing world!
