On the Skills Needed in the New Economy
As the world continues to evolve, e-commerce sites like Fiverr/Upwork/ Mechanical Turk are going to get more and more chunks of business as the world economy evolves from products to services.
Essentially, E-commerce is concerned with any exchange of GOODS and/or SERVICES using the medium of the Internet.
Fiverr/Upwork/ Mechanical Turk are all e-marketplaces just like the already popular Amazon/Alibaba/Konga/Jumia just that while the latter deal in goods, the former deal with services.
The key to the new economy is upskilling yourself to get those skills that are in high demand which are usually IT based both because they are in vogue and because they don't need you to be physically present.
Examples are Web Development/Design, User Interface, Mobile apps, Data mining are some areas that are in-demand.
Advisedly these are some of the areas where skill-acquisition needs to tilt especially as 8-5 jobs keep disappearing and at the same time become incapable of 'making ends to meet.'
Additionally, it is forecasted that given the rapid developments in Info Tech, Artificial intelligence (AI) will take over jobs but at the same time many other jobs will be created. Thus people need to prepare themselves for the next 'Industrial' revolution already taking place.
So while you invest money in getting an MBA, try to also get yourself some 'cool' skills that can actually create value for you.
And sometimes it's a skill we already have that we can put to good use. For instance writing, arts and craft, customer service and consulting on things we are very proficient in.
AI will eventually do most jobs that can be programmed and do not need any degree of emotional skills to execute better than humans. To survive humans have to excel in emotional Intelligence (EI) and at the same time make jobs that require EI to have premium over those that the machines can do better. Probably why there's been a lot of noise about EI recently.
And no wonder careers like Nursing and Care-giving are one of the best paid jobs (in the developed world of course) because there is a need for high level of empathy and emotional discretion in providing such services which places a premium!
