Women's Right
But why should a lady pursue her dreams? I hear talk of a female becoming a Doctor! What has the world turned into? For goodness sake she’s supposed to be a baby-making machine!
You see what reading too many books causes...And a Awusa-Nomad for that matter. How many Doctors do you see who are female amongst your folks? Is that what the society expects from you? You are bringing shame to us! It is a taboo for a lady not to get married...why didn’t you just hitch someone and do the right thing by tradition. You don’t have to be happy...just miserably accept any Tom, Dick and Harry that tries to make you his wife...the most important thing is ‘what they will say’ and what they will say now is already flying around and causing so much havoc.
And it is not your place to complain thereafter because no matter what, you are supposed to STAY married. GET married as early as possible...no dreams...and if you must dream stay within the realm of Soyayya Ruwan Zuma or Matar Aure...and other appropriate romantic titles.
Yours is not to discover the next cure for breast cancer (let them keep cutting them)...that’s a ‘man’s’ job description anyway.
Babies, babies and more babies please!
So you want to rub shoulders with ‘men’ right! I think it is high time that ‘men’ meet and put paid to such threat being posed on ‘our lordship’ over women. We are over them and so we must be firm and not let them have any enlightenment or freedom. We must use all the religious/cultural tools at our disposal to insinuate, misinterpret, and double-speak in order to keep them down.
Can you imagine, my wife who is a secondary school leaver is trying to learn sowing and I told her no...I cannot have it! I would rather die than let her be empowered. She says that it’s just to help towards the upkeep and maybe Nur our daughter can go to school as now we can’t afford it. I had to teach her a lesson by spanking her and bringing her back in line and she dare not protest or else I will divorce her and bring in her replacement. Women are so many nowadays that you are spoilt for choice.
Anyway why must my wife try to embarrass me by doing that? Nur is okay the way she is and moreover what is even the use of the school as I’ll be marrying her off in a few years. Is it that she’s tired of eating ‘Kuka’ and tuwo? Well for her information she has just started eating that and will do so for a long time to come. Is that not what our forefathers ate and gave birth to us.
Anyway maybe they are seeing a role model in a certain Lady who just started her PhD. But she is a ‘baturiya’...and she has been brainwashed. She is talking about dreams...but is there any bigger dream than for a woman than to be in her husband’s house. That is the 'song' I have heard, from my mallams to my elders. I wonder.
My people there must be something to be done.
Let us keep talking.
P.S. This is fiction. Any resemblance to any social group is highly coincidental and deeply regretted. it is not my intention to take advantage of their 'popularity or unique selling point and pre-occupation'.
